5 Tips for Fall Camping

Updated: Sep 13, 2023

Fall is such a beautiful season with cool mornings and evenings, and warm, sunny, days! It’s a wonderful time of year to get fresh air, enjoy nature, and make the most of outdoor activities. Fall can be an amazing time to go camping, we think we may even like it more than summer! There are some differences that you'll want to be prepared for, check out our tips below!

Tip #1 - Layer Up!

Our first tip is to dress in layers. Depending where you live, Autumn weather can bring a range of temperatures all within one day. The mornings and evenings will be very chilly, especially when the sun goes down. During the day, temperatures still get warm, especially if you’re lucky enough to have some strong sunshine! You’ll want to adjust accordingly throughout the day. Whether you’re hiking in the warm sun, or snuggling by the fire, you want to be able to add and peel layers as needed!

Tip #2 - Activities

You can still enjoy most of the activities that you normally would in the summer maybe with the exception of swimming. While you can get some good swimming days in September, it’s better not to count on it. Campgrounds normally have planned activities in the summer, but usually do not in the fall. You'll be on your own for entertainment! Campgrounds will be quieter and less crowded. You'll want to check ahead to make sure bathrooms are still open, etc. If you enjoy shopping or going out to eat in a near by town as an activity, there may be shortened hours, or some stores that close completely for the off-season. Do some research before you go to know what to expect. However, hiking or biking on, trails is an amazing way to enjoy the outdoors during this time of year. It’s wonderful to feel the warm sun on your skin and the cool air in your lungs. Trails are beautiful this time of year as fall colors make an entrance. We have also kayaked in the fall. This is extremely weather dependent and you need to be safe, but early fall offers lots of opportunity to continue enjoying the water! Again, wear layers - and stay dry!

Speaking of staying dry - That’s our Tip #3!

Autumn can bring showers and you want to be sure to stay dry so you don’t get chilled. Getting a chill this time of year can be impossible to get rid of. You want to be preemptive and bring rain gear as necessary. Stay warm and keep the inside of your tent dry too!

Tip #4 - Tick Tock watch the Clock

As you are hiking, kayaking, or cooking dinner - you want to remember that the days are growing shorter. Keep an eye on sunrise and sunset times. If you still have activities to do you’ll want to be prepared to do them in the dark - otherwise make sure you’re back to the fire by then! :)

Tip #5 - Cold and Cozy

Sleeping in a tent on a chilly fall night is the best sleep you’ll get as long as you have enough blankets! While grade A sleeping bags are nice, they are not necessary if you don’t have one. You can make d0 with what you have! We’ve used a regular comforter and blankets we had at our house with sleeping pads underneath and we slept great. We do definitely recommend having something in between you and the ground (a sleeping pad, air mattress, or thick blanket). The ground gets very cold at night! Sleeping in a tent on a chilly fall night t is such a cozy experience! Your nose will get cold, but it's all a part of the fun. Wear warm pajamas and bring extra blankets! If you're still cold, you can wear a winter hat while you sleep to keep in your body heat.

Bonus Tip! - Whiskey and Cider

On our fall trips we make sure to grab some Jack Fire and local Apple Cider! This is a great treat that will warm you up from the inside - out! We love enjoying a warm cup as we play cards by the fire. Whether it’s alcohol or not, planning a warm drink for the evening is a special touch for this season.

Warm drinks, warm clothes, warm blankets, warm friends. You’ll have an amazing time! Don’t let the cooler weather stop you from enjoying the outdoors.

Sincerely,
